Political Art

Many artists working in a neoclassical style were doing so to put forward a political agenda in a rather overt way. Think about most of the artwork we have studied thus far. we have studied renaissance art, baroque art, roman amd greek art. please take info from there and apply here.. must be 1 page in total…  also reply in your opinion to these 2 students at the bottom  of this question.

  • Do you think we have looked at any works that were devoid of a political (and I am including religion here) point of view?
  • What about art today?
  • If you are familiar with other art movements outside the realm of our course, feel free to bring up these examples to add to the discussion

1.Do you think we have looked at any works that were devoid of a political (and I am including religion here) point of view?  No I don’t think that we have looked at any works that were devoid of political religion point of view because in the 15th and 16th century they saw political life and its problems largely from a religious point of view and from background of a traditional hierarchical conception of the nature of the universe. Stylized painting and sculpture existed to teach religion and adorn cathedrals.(The Birth of Art) The 15th and 16th centuries also saw the rise of capitalism and a burgeoning middle class, the creation of modern nation states, and the upheaval of the Protestant Reformation.

2.What about art today?  I think art today is not devoid of a political /religion point of view because art presents direct and indirect perspectives on society and even though society change  art and politics will  always have a symbiotic way.

I feel that art always seems to be tied to politics.  All I can think of is landscape painting or still life. But the thought behind the painting must not have a reason. I guess if the painting was when the artist  was in a tranquil, relaxing moment, then it would not be political.

2. What about art today?

I have viewed a lot of art, but much of it still has something to say or make a statement. Landscape paintings can have both a tranquil or with a message behind them. I feel political art today is still used for society, which involves human rights to get  a message across. Some of the messages are intended for political causes. On Monday I attended a Museum and viewed a few  interesting pictures. The first was a modern art piece, it was a photograph of all these parts of scrap metal. I found it odd, but I looked at it and I thought, it was telling me our world has become a throwaway place clean it up. One more picture I looked at was  a broken glass in the shape of bat wings, again my thoughts were tranquil relaxed. I though this could be a nonpolitical piece. Sometimes I feel the viewer distinguish the kind of art at the time.
