The Family Structural theory gives guidelines to use that help us determine if a family is functioning in a healthy way.  By using these guidelines and behaviors we can determine if a family is functional or dysfunctional. By looking at how they communicate and relate to each other.  Instead of focusing on each individual, this theory places focus on the family as a whole and how they interact with each other.  When a crisis arises, how is the family able to deal with the issue. (Structural Family Therapy, n.d.) Is there respect, are the family rules abided by, are the boundaries kept.  This is where problems can arise and families get stuck, a functional healthy family will be able to maintain these boundaries and respect to work through their issues.  A dysfunctional family will disengage or lash out not caring about feelings.  The problem or crisis will then control the family, not the family controlling the crisis or what is happening to them and not being able to move through the problem.

All families will have conflict and issues; it is how they deal with them that will determine if they can work in a functional order.
