Child abuse and maltreatment is not limited to a particular age and can occur in the infant, toddler, preschool, and school-age years. Choose one of the four age groups (infant, toddler, preschool, or school age) and discuss the types of abuse that are most often seen in this age. Discuss warning signs and physical and emotional assessment findings the nurse may see that could indicate child abuse. Discuss cultural variations of health practices that can be misidentified as child abuse. Describe the reporting mechanism in your state and nurse responsibilities related to the reporting of suspected child abuse.
The most common age groups for abuse are infant, toddler, and preschool because they do not either know that it is wrong or can’t speak for themselves. Preschoolers show signs of child abuse with unexplained bruises and injuries, frequent signs of poor hygiene, nightmares and sleep disturbances, frequent bed wetting, behavior issues with aggression to adults, and withdrawal from peers. Nurses and all healthcare workers should educate themselves on the signs because of the consequences on the child both short-term and long-term. Nurses and healthcare workers are on the frontlines and stand to protect the children from harm. If abuse is suspected the nurse and other healthcare workers are mandated to report. Report and continue to report until something is done. The nurse can go to supervisor and work up the line of contacts. Contact local child protective services and local police department. There are also child abuse hotlines both national and locally. (CCPFS, 2016). It is important to also be educated on different culture practices. Some different cultures have certain practices that fit their beliefs but could present as bruises. Russian, Asian, and Mexican cultures practice “Cuppingâ€. A heated cup is applied to skin it creates a suction and is meant treat illness in their cultures. The suction could be mistaken to some as bruises from abuse. (Harris, 2016).
