Application: Patient-Centered Technologies

Application: Patient-Centered Technologies

Although health care professionals play a significant role in health outcomes, the day-to-day management of a patient’s health is also a personal responsibility. Physicians and nurses can provide diagnoses, interventions, treatments, and prescriptions, but they will only have an impact if patients follow through with their health care provider’s recommendations.

The advent of diverse health-related technologies is providing unprecedented opportunities to assist patients in maintaining control of their health.  Consider for a moment health and fitness mobile apps, talking pill bottles, and smart apartments. New patient-centered technologies are being developed every day!

For this Assignment, you will select a health-related mobile app, personal health record, smart technology, or an interactive social media site that is helping patients to better manage their health.

Note: For the purposes of this assignment, a “mobile app” is defined as a technology application that can be viewed, played, and stored on smartphone devices and tablets.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 35, “Consumer/Patient Engagement and eHealth Resources”, in the course text, Essentials of Nursing Informatics, and consider how technological innovations are transforming the ways patients’ access health-related information.
  • Reflect on the various patient-centered technologies that you or others may use, as well as those gaining attention in the media.
  • Conduct research on patient-centered technologies that assist users in managing their own health.
  • Select one technology category such as apps, personal health records, smart technologies, or interactive social media sites to further explore. Examine the parameters of a specific patient-centered technology within this category. How does this technology put patients in control of their health?

To complete:

Submit a  5-page paper by Thursday 07/21/2016 that addresses the following:

  • Identify the patient-centered technology that you selected, as well as the population of patients for whom this technology is designed.
  • Describe how this technology is tailored toward patient use. Specifically, explain how the features, functions, and design can help patients manage their own health.
  • Explain the risks and benefits this technology might bring to users.
  • Predict the impact this technology might have on patient health outcomes. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from the Learning Resources and any additional sources.

Note: If you choose to select an interactive social media site, text- or article-based websites such as WebMD or Health.gov may not be selected. For the purposes of this course, interactive social media is defined as a digital technology that allows users to manipulate, interact with, and/or engage with other users. Ensure that if you choose an interactive social media site, it adheres to this rule.

Security and Integrity of Clinical Information Systems

Security and Integrity of Clinical Information Systems

Establishing security standards that protect patient data is an important step in the database design process. Protecting the confidentiality of personal health information is not optional; it is mandated under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA violations can result in both fines and legal consequences. Failing to protect private information can also damage a health care organization’s reputation as well as result in the loss of patients’ peace of mind.

For this Discussion, you consider the clinical information systems presented in the case studies below and identify the security and integrity problems and risks that need to be addressed.

Case Study 1:

A busy academic hospital has grown rapidly and acquired multiple clinical information systems that interface with each other. Physicians and practitioners require access to each system and frequently have workflows that require access to multiple systems at the same time. In addition, practitioner responsibilities often require them to complete documentation or access clinical information at home and during off hours.

Case Study 2:

An increase in the number of clinical research studies and the use of undergraduate students as research assistants for subject recruitment was perceived as a risk for a medium-sized academic hospital. Students were enrolled at the hospital-affiliated university but still required a credentialing process to be able to access clinical areas of the hospital and clinical systems. The hospital wants to meet IRB and HIPAA research regulations, and to exceed HIPAA’s minimum necessary principle.

Case Study 3:

As a large multi-specialty academic medical practice, providers are often utilizing laptop computers and mobile devices in patient care and research-related activities. Tracking, securing, and managing the numerous devices to mitigate loss, theft, or other breaches is important to the enterprise.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the security and integrity of clinical information systems. Consider the importance of security and integrity, as well as the consequences of failing to address these aspects of database design.
  • Select one of the case studies above to examine further for this Discussion.
  • Determine the security or integrity problems in the clinical information system in the case study. What legal, ethical, and organizational risks do these issues pose?
  • Begin to formulate a potential solution or strategy to address the security and integrity problems. How would this solution or strategy mitigate the security or integrity risks you identified?Post by tomorrow 07/19/16, 550 words in APA format with 3 references. Include the level one headings below:  1) A description of the security and integrity problems identified with regards to the case study you selected. 2) Select at least two specific risks (legal, ethical, or organizational) related to the case study and propose a solution or strategy to address each. Justify your response

James Cimino’s Desiderata

James Cimino’s Desiderata

Desiderata is a Latin word that translates to “something that is wanted or needed.” It is obvious that James Cimino had this translation in mind when he created his “Desiderata for Controlled Medical Vocabularies.” In his work, Cimino outlines 12 desiderata he believes the health care community should consider when constructing medical vocabularies. He also highlights the need to control the vocabulary used within terminology sets, as well as the requirements for doing so.

For electronic health records (EHR) and clinical decision support systems (CDS) to truly be successful, Cimino, along with many other health care professionals, expresses the vital need to standardize and control the terminology being used in health care settings.

For this Discussion, you will use one of Cimino’s desiderata (or themes) to critically appraise a nursing terminology set:

Cimino’s 12 themes for the 21st century:

  • Vocabulary content
  • Concept orientation
  • Concept permanence
  • Nonsemantic concept identifiers
  • Polyhierarchy
  • Formal definitions
  • Reject NEC “Not Elsewhere Classified”
  • Multiple granularities
  • Multiple consistent views
  • Representing context
  • Graceful evolution
  • Recognize redundancy

To prepare:

  • Review the article “Desiderata for Controlled Medical Vocabularies in the Twenty-First Century” in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider how each theme aims to control the vocabulary used by nursing terminologies.
  • Reflect on prominent standardized nursing terminologies sets, such as NIC, SNOMED, SABA, NANDA, and NOC. How might these terminologies compare to the requirements outlined in Cimino’s 12 themes?
  • Select one nursing terminology set and one of Cimino’s themes to further examine. Does the terminology align with the requirements of this theme? Why or why not?

Post on by tomorrow 7/19/2016, 550 words in APA format and 2 references which include the level one  headings below:

 1) A brief description of the nursing terminology set and theme you selected.

2) Explain whether this terminology aligns with the requirements and why. Provide terminology and vocabulary examples to support your answer

Nurses as Health Advocates

Nurses as Health Advocates

Nurses as Health Advocates

What does it take to be an effective health advocate? As a nurse, you have many opportunities to advocate for patients and populations, whether formally or informally. Being an advocate involves more than knowing how to lobby or to whom to write letters. It requires passion and compassion, commitment and courage.

In this Discussion, you will consider the attributes of an effective advocate for population health and/or the nursing profession. You will analyze those attributes that help nurses be a powerful force in improving the quality of health care.

To prepare:

  • Review the article “On Being a Good Nurse: Reflections on the Past and Preparing for the Future” and “War, its aftermath, and U.S. health policy: Toward a comprehensive health program for America’s military personnel, veterans, and their families” found in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Consider the multiple health care needs of returning veterans and their families.

Post by Day 3 two types of health needs returning veterans and their families might need. Identify two types of health needs returning veterans and their families might need. How might you advocate for the needs of this population. What type of advocacy skills would you need and how could you develop them. What responsibility does a nurse have to be an advocate? Give specific examples.

Choose two long-term care facilities

Choose two long-term care facilities—one from nursing facilities, assisted living, or subacute care and another from adult day care, home health care, or hospice care—on which you would want to base your research work. Research the South University Online Library and the Internet to read about your chosen long-term care facilities.

Assume you are responsible for the management and administration of the two facilities. You have to orient the newly appointed manager by providing an overview on managing long-term care. You also need to discuss the programs of the two facilities. From this perspective and based on your research about the facilities, prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation of 10–15 slides including the following:

  • What are the various multidisciplinary departments (teams) included in your facilities?
  • Who comprise the target population being served by the various programs provided by your chosen facilities?
  • What are the major staffing and human resource issues faced by your chosen facilities?
  • What are the significant trends in long-term care likely to impact the operation of the various programs provided by your chosen facilities, and what is your plan of action to overcome them?
  • What are the various forms of cooperation and integration existing in your chosen facilities? Discuss the nature of management, financing, and quality issues related to integration and cooperation in the facilities?

Support your responses with examples.

Use the Notes section of the slides to provide additional information.

Health Behavior SLP2

By now, you have identified and done some literature search on  your Module 1 Session Long Project (SLP) topic/health behavior and  target population. In short, you have assessed the need for a program or  intervention to address the health behavior you previously identified.

For Module 2 SLP, you will again conduct a literature search  utilizing peer-reviewed journal articles, books, professional  organization articles, etc., to help you identify evidence-based  strategies to best address the health behavior in your target population  and create a program/intervention plan.

Write a paper (3 pages in length) summarizing your findings on  evidence-based strategies and a workplan to address the health behavior.  A workplan sample can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/OralHealth/state_programs/pdf/workplans.pdf

The following items will be assessed in particular:

  1. Using the same topic you have chosen from Module 1 SLP, develop a  program goal and at least two objectives (1 learning objective and 1  behavioral objective) for your target population. Your objectives must  be specific, measureable, achievable, realistic, and time-phased  (SMART). Make sure that you have read the required readings on SMART  objectives before developing your goal and objectives.
  2. Based on your literature search, provide a summary of evidence-based  strategies that have been shown effective in promoting or reducing the  behavior in your target population.
  3. Identify two evidence-based strategies that you will use to  implement your program or intervention. Provide an explanation why you  have chosen these strategies and defend your choices.
  4. For now, include a workplan table with your goals, objectives, and  activities/strategies. NOTE: Other parts of the workplan such as the  data measurement tools, timeframe, responsible person, and measures of  success will be completed in the next module SLP.
