I live in the town of Atascadero, population 28,000, located in San Luis Obispo (SLO) County, CA. The population of SLO County as of 2010 was 269,637. San luis Obispo is the county seat, located along the Pacific Ocean in Central California between Los Angeles & the San Francisco Bay Area. The area is more rural & agricultural, with communities scattered along the beaches, coastal hills & mountains of the Santa Lucia Range, supporting fishing, agriculture & tourist activities. The mainstays influencing our economy are the California Polytechnic State University (20,000 students), tourism & agriculture. SLO county is the 3rd largest producer of wine in CA. Wine grapes are the 2nd largest agriculture crop in the county after strawberries (Wikipedia, 2016). Politically, we are influenced by the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power plant & the constant geopolitics of food & water. There is not a week that goes by without something on the news or in the newspaper regarding The Mothers for Peace, the NRC & most recently, Diablo Canyon’s impending closure in 2024. That competes with water, water, water, or really the lack of water. It is a very touchy subject, well discussed by everyone, but there does not appear to be a solution, just a need for water. The county supervisors are always pushing through emergency ordinances to deal with the purported ground water depletion. Currently, the chatter is regarding a desalination plant which, ironically involves the nuclear power plant (Alexiev,2013). I have a feeling it will just start raining before this is ever resolved.
A phenomenological community is simply a group of people who share values, interests, beliefs &/or goals (Wikianswers,2016). There is not necessarily any geographic boundary. I would have to say for me, it would be my health club, “Give Fitness”. It is a phenomenological community where us members go, as we share a common interest in physical fitness and working out in various ways. We share a goal of staying healthy and believe it is a important in our lives.
I think the biggest challenge of Community Health Nursing would be the complexity of it. So many different situations, different needs, different complex issues each with their own different enviroment. I am not sure I would know where to begin. The benfit would certainly be that these clients need the help, guidance, teaching & intervention. Just looking at my own county, I see communities within communities, rural areas, minorities, disparities, elderly & the huge student population from all over the world. Solutions would be challenging so would first have to be identified & of course those involved willing to acknowledge. It would take time to establish a rapport & assess taking into account any cultural influences. Then a plan would need to be advocated using appropriate resources (Malcolm,2004). Follow up would also be important. The goal would be to achieve optimal health outcomes.
